Rebecca 'Becca' Moore.
During the raging early years of punk 'Sludge' was an underground sensation. It combined the fast pace of the Ramones with the technicality of the Clash and blew people away. But it never made it to the big time. Maybe it was their image or their unwillingness to be involved with anything truly commercial, whatever reason they stayed in the underground and became something of a musicians band. Everyone expected guitarist James 'Jacky Boy' Moore to go solo but he stayed true to the band and eventually settled down into an easy suburban life.
Before all of that though Jacky welcomed into his family his only daughter, Rebecca. Born on February 12th, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. Rebecca Moore was the third of Jacky's children with his wife Christine. Rebecca's birth coincided with the end of Sludge's, Paint it Red tour. At the time Jacky was in San Francisco with the band. The sudden realization that he had missed one of his children being born made the guitarist take a step back and begin to wonder about what else he was missing in his children's lives. So Jacky took a hiatus from the band and went home to be with his family which included two older boys Marcus and Christian, aged seven and four respectively.
Taking time out to be with his family turned out to be not quite what Jacky expected and his hiatus lasted barely seven months. Jacky's return to the band heralded Becca's earliest exposure to the music scene. Not even a year old she went on her first tour with her Dad and family. This would set the tone for the rest of her life.
Now Christine Moore had never been much of a rocker girl, if anything she was the complete opposite, and she always worried about her children living the hectic rocker lifestyle. She did everything she could to make hotel rooms and vans homey and give the children a sense of a normal life. She even went so far as to begin to home school them in the hopes that they could get a normal education. Becca didn't show much interest in school though, sure she did well enough but Christine could never seem to pry her daughter away from the shiny instruments that always seemed to be surrounding her.
Eventually Christine lost the battle. Becca learned to play the piano, the guitar and gained a passing knowledge of the bass. After nearly seven years of hauling the kids around on the road Christine finally put her foot down and hauled them all back to their brownstone in Brooklyn. Jacky caved and returned home with the family leaving the band permanently. He continued to work on projects mostly sitting in as a guest guitarist with other bands and always hinting that he might start a solo career.
For the kids it was a big change and they all had a hard time initially adjusting to life at home with other kids. Becca already had it in her head though that she was going to be a musician and refused to be deterred. She put up with piano lessons form cranky old Italian ladies and guitar lessons from grungy struggling musicians who salivated at the thought of being let into the Moore household. Her favorite moments from those years were the ones when her father would actually take her aside and teach her how to play guitar.
Becca wasn't alone in wanting to be a musician and she found a kindred spirit in childhood friend Alyssa Giovanni. The two quickly formed a little musical sisterhood and agreed to become musicians together. By the age of thirteen they were composing their own songs and preparing to make demo tapes. Jacky thought it was so funny that he let the pair of them use the studio he built in the basement of the family home. At fifteen Alyssa and Becca put together with a song titled 'Hype.' They decided to call themselves Brooklyn Sisters and sent it off to various record labels. It was a pretty low key demo with not much more than the two girls singing and Becca playing guitar. They had decided pretty early on that Becca would play the instruments and Alyssa would be the main vocals.
Eventually one label gave them a call back and wanted to really see if a pair of fifteen year old girls had really made the demo. They were made to audition in front of the half the labels office with just Becca's acoustic guitar to back them. It was only when one of the assistants pointed out the name Moore that people got really excited. They could already see how they could market and package the band. It was then that the two girls who had been friends for nearly seven years began to splinter apart.
They were quickly shuffled away into a studio and recorded their first album with 'Hype' as their first single. The album eventually titled 'Hype' was released in 1997 with most of the fanfare revolving around the fact that Becca was punk guitar legend Jacky Boy Moore's daughter. Once that died away the album sunk to the bottom of the pile and the brief hint of success the girls had enjoyed faded away. Becca refused to be deterred and pushed Alyssa into making another album a little over year later. So the girls went back into the studio and began to agonize over the album occasionally doing shows in tiny clubs throughout New York city.
In 2000 they released their second album, 'The Potter's Hands'. The album was made up of both rerecorded material from their first album and new material. It did marginally better. This time the record label kept surprisingly mum about Becca's connections and tried to let the music speak for itself. The girls were able to tour the east coast successfully and started to enjoy a few hints of fame. People began to talk about their mismatched styles, Becca with her punky look and Alyssa's more June Cleaver fashion sense. They began to become something people wanted to see for nothing else than to check out what they were wearing that night.
Buoyed by success both girls started to enjoy some of fame's perks. Becca started to drink and smoke and Alyssa started out just drinking. In 2002 they went back and recorded a second album, titled 'Noises in Your Head'. The album was greeted with actual critical acclaim and the girls began to really get notice. They joined in a national tour and began to soak up fame. For Becca who had been raised on tours it was just like riding a horse and she settled in easily. For Alyssa who had never left the city until two years ago it was a big change. To keep up she began to use chemical help. At first it was simple things like caffeine pills and adderall. No one really noticed, they were all so caught up in the tour and how quickly the girls were getting famous.
When the tour ended the girls did another short tour of the east coast and then went back into the studio. In 2005 they released 'Uptown/Downtown' the album was where the real turbulence began. Up until that point the problems between the girls had stayed pretty much under the surface. Becca had noticed Alyssa's withdrawal from their regular group but was so caught up in her own life including her romance with fellow musician Dimitri Anders. Alyssa's drug problems began to really grow once they got back to New York. It was during the recording of 'Uptown/Downtown' that she started using cocaine. At first people thought that she was doing better and had maybe just had a bit of depression.
It didn't stay that way though and Becca eventually penned 'Walking With a Ghost' and slipped it onto the album as a subtle hint at Alyssa. Alyssa didn't seem to care though and her drug use just got worse. The follow up tour for 'Uptown/Downtown' was successful but Becca, their manager and the rest of the crew began to take note of Alyssa's increasingly erratic behavior. They tried to intervene but nothing seemed to work. Alyssa just grew more uncontrollable to the point at which she and Becca would have knock down drag out fights. Eventually Becca, fed up walked out of the band. In late 2006 the 'Brooklyn Sisters' went on hiatus. Becca became serious about her relationship with Dimitri Anders and the two moved in together. After a few months of cooling their respective heads the girls agreed to work on another album.
The year turned out to be one of the most volatile years for Becca. Recording the album was a nightmare and Alyssa was impossible to work with. Everything fell apart though when Alyssa didn't show for a recording session one day. Fed up Becca went home and the girls long time manager, Jason Riddicks, went to Alyssa's apartment. He found Alyssa dead of a apparent drug overdose. On October 17th, 2007 Alyssa Giovanni was put to rest in a Brooklyn Cemetery. It was also the day Becca quit drinking, though she still smokes. She went quietly back into the studio and finished the album. The album titled simply, 'Brooklyn Sisters.' Was the group's most successful but Becca refused to promote it. She felt she had to release it for Alyssa but didn't want anything more to do with the band.
Becca took almost a year off, eventually breaking up with Dimitri Anders and working through her issues with Alyssa's death. She kept out of the public eye and seemed to not be working. To everyone's surprise in late August of 2008 Becca revealed that she had been working on an album. It had been in secret but it was a very personal project and reflected things she had never been able to deal with when she was in the group. Its still uncertain when the actual album will be released but its first single 'Breathe (2AM)' became something of an indie hit.
Becca continues to live in Brooklyn near her family and is working on finishing up her album. The death of her best friend and musical partner has had a deep impact on Becca's life. The girl who was once famous for going out to drink and party it up like a boy has sobered up and grown up.
